IN CHARACTER
Character Name: NoHo Hank
Canon: Barry
Canon Point: end of season 2; Barry flat out murdered pretty much everybody in the stash house and Hank received news he's supposed to go back to Chechnya...AND NOW HE'S HERE INSTEAD
In-Game Tattoo Placement: left scapula
Current Health/Status: pretty darn healthy! He got through Barry's rampage unscathed, and aside from the processing of the new shocking developments he's good to go!
Age: 36
Species: human
Content Warnings: most of his warnings come from stuff that's implied more than anything else; his place in canon in general deals with the Chechan mob, murder, and drug dealing, but Hank specifically also warrants warnings for history of drug addiction, transient themes of homophobia (like. severe "if he goes home he might get murdered" levels), prison life and all the dubiously ethical crap that entails, and probably more but that's all I've got right this second.
History: not a whole lot is known about Hank before the start of the show; we know he's from Chechnya, and that he's the number 2 guy for the branch of the Chechan mob we first see him working for, and the number 2 guy when he joins with the Bolivians, so it's reasonable to assume he's gained a decent enough reputation with the Chechans thus far. We know, based on his tattoos, that he's done time in Russian prisons (somebody wrote up a post that outlines exactly what each one probably means and what can be assumed from them), although only served 3 years out of his sentence of 6. We also can safely assume he struggled with substance abuse at some point and beat it, and that he's an accomplished thief.
We also know he really doesn't want to go back home; he's told by a higher ranking guy in the mob that he's supposed to go back to Chechnya and he seems absolutely devastated by the news, and he'd spent an awful lot of time in the first two seasons trying to be as American as possible, from the way he dresses to the way he speaks even to the way he names himself. Between the tattoos that outline a pretty rough life and the shock of the news it's safe to assume his history before the start of the show wasn't the easiest path.
CRAU History and Impact: n/a
Personality: Anyone who meets Hank might not be especially impressed at first glance. He's rarely without a wide smile or welcoming, friendly words, and in general seems far too naive for the world he lives in, always assuming the best of everyone and giving people more chances than they probably deserve. He's why Barry almost gets caught in season one, because he's too fascinated by cool tech not to leave a camera in the car and filming while out trying to double-cross Barry, and he would much rather offer sandwiches and be hospitable than deal with the nastier side of mob life.
It's not a wrong impression; at his core, Hank is a Nice Guy. He wants to help his friends and do the right thing, wants to make sure the people around him are happy and content and well taken care of. He's a nurturer, and an optimist, no matter how crappy the situation gets.
But he was also raised in the criminal world, or at least accepted into it early enough that it's shaped him. Raised with their traditions and their ways, and while he doesn't generally seem Like Them, and he even says later in season 2 that he's had to pretend to be something he isn't his entire life, he nevertheless is good at faking it. He's a thief by trade, and familiar and ingrained enough in criminal tradition that he points out that he's not mad Barry shot him, because he would have done the same if their situations were reversed. He sends his goons to shoot at Barry to get his attention but isn't mad when Barry wings one of them in retaliation, in fact takes the violence that comes with the territory in stride as if it doesn't bother him at all, as if it's normal. He resorts to plans of violence and murder to take out his perceived competition in the organization, and doesn't blink an eye when Goran opts for torture to try to get Barry to take a job for them.
But then again, Hank was also born in Chechnya, and given his age it's been a warzone more than it hasn't, and steeped in corruption and government-sanctioned murder of anyone it doesn't like, so violence probably IS just another part of daily life for him, the criminal underworld a practical way of earning enough of a living to survive and enough powerful friends to keep him (relatively) safe. And considering he's done time in prison, where kindness is only punished as weakness and taken advantage of (and he seems to have been given a tattoo specifically to protect him from that), and he grew up in a country that historically hasn't really approved of people with his...proclivities, shall we say (aka his definite crush on Barry and probable relationship with Cristobal) he's developed the ability to act the part of the big tough criminal when it's required of him. He verbally berates his underlings for poor performance, even lashing out physically when he's frustrated. He talks the talk and walks the walk, and given how heavily tatted up he is he's capable of cutting an imposing enough figure when he needs to. It's just that with the move to the states, and L.A., he can act more like who he actually is underneath with significantly less risk of repercussions so long as he stays in the states.
Which puts him in a pretty interesting place; because he's capable of helping run criminal enterprises and can do criminal things with a fair amount of competency he's successful enough at his job, but it's tempered with his nicer impulses, his capacity for forgiveness and giving second chances, for trying to see both sides of things, which makes him more flexible and rational in his dealings. He wants Barry in his army to take over his 'rival' for Cristobal's affection/partnership, but when Barry proposes an alternative to train Hank's guys instead, he accepts the compromise, as opposed to Fuches and Goran who were far more uncompromising in their requests.
Because Hank, surprisingly enough, isn't as shortsighted as he seems. He adapts to whatever comes his way and tries to turn it to his advantage in a positive way, tries to befriend and diffuse rather than barrel his way through with guns blazing. His ultimate job is to run a hotel, and it's blatantly apparent it's really where his talents lie, keeping everybody happy and things running smoothly.
Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping: Hank is completely, totally, human; he's got great thief and tech skills, and is decent with weapons, and has charm out the wazoo, but he's perfectly squishy and mortal outside of that.
Inventory: handgun with 2 extra clips, a few changes of clothes (grey chinos, cargo shorts, a red polo, a black polo, a less-obnoxious short sleeve button down, and a wifebeater, plus a couple changes of socks and underwear) complete with a jaunty beret, a floppy straw hat, a blonde wig, and a baseball cap, a complete lock pick set and a burner phone with a few hacker-type apps on it (that probably won't work in Deerington anyway and will just like. Send puppy and kitten pictures), a bag of Russian candies, a Russian-to-English dictionary, and a pair of boat shoes, all very neatly packed in a duffel bag.
